In some cases surgery is required on the teeth & gums to allow the fitting of dentures. Generally this will involve either:

  • Removal of teeth or root remnants
  • Removal of excessive soft tissue (flabby ridges)
  • Smoothing of bony lumps to allow proper fitting of a denture

In some cases the dentures can be fitted on the day of surgery, otherwise only a few weeks healing may be required.

The stitches inserted during surgery are generally dissolvable and don’t need to be removed.

You should be prepared for a number of expected post-operative signs and symptoms, such as:

  • Facial swelling
  • Bruising of the facial skin and around the eyes
  • Pain and/or discomfort
  • Reduced mouth opening
  • Jaw joint tenderness
  • Bleeding from the wounds
  • Wound infection (rare)

These signs and symptoms generally disappear after one week. Pain can usually be managed with paracetamol/anti-inflammatories. Ice-packs and a soft, cool diet are also recommended.
