PROCEDURES

WISDOM

TEETH

is the common name for the rearmost molars. It’s common for these teeth to become impacted (not erupt correctly), and in many cases your dentist may recommend removal. Removal can often be done by a general dentist, but an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon will be better equipped to handle any complications that may occur.

Wisdom tooth removal is usually a half day procedure and doesn’t require a hospital stay. It may be done under general or local anaesthetic.

DENTAL IMPLANT

SURGERY

DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE USED TO REPLACE MISSING TEETH

They generally consist of titanium screws which are inserted into the jaw to provide an anchor for prosthetics (crowns, bridges or dentures). They are not suitable for all patients, as they require enough bone to properly integrate the implant. Implants may require several procedures, for example broken or decayed teeth may need to be removed first – this will require healing time before the implant surgery. In some instances bone grafting or a sinus lift will be needed to prepare for the implant. Following a successful implant, the crown (or bridge) can then be attached

ORTHOGNATIC

SURGERY

Orthognathic surgery is generally used when braces alone can’t achieve a perfect bite. The most common scenarios are the lower jaw being too far forward or back, or the upper jaw being too large or too small in relation to the lower jaw. Most often the treatment is combined with braces. Depending on the correction required, surgery may involve one or both jaws, and involves cutting the bone and repositioning it with the aid of titanium mini-plates and screws. In the majority of cases the surgery can be performed through the mouth (intra-orally) and won’t leave any scars on the face.
